Invisible Influences

I’ve found myself completely encapsulated by Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities.

Although I finished the book a few weeks back (it’s a relatively short book) it has hijacked my thoughts when working. Without going too much into the book, Marco Polo describes cities he has encountered on his travels to Chinese ruler Kublai Khan. The book is separated into two interweaving texts, Polo’s descriptions of these cities and the meetings between him and Khan, in italics in my copy.

The description of these cities are truly marvelous, full of rich visual imagery and impossible scenarios. These scenarios have found their way into my drawings lately. I will be uploading these in a batch soon once I have uploaded recent sculptural works. I’ll be posting them in the next few weeks with new texts.
