Playing about

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Have been working alot recently so studio time has been scarce but I have been playing around with a piece that I did before Christmas today and it has led to a new chain of thought. The original piece Bangkok Barrier (2008) was part of my hybrid objects series that took functioning objects and recreated them so to speak in a new context. This piece drew from my travels in Bangkok and the delightfully low level of craftsmanship of some common pavement barriers I encountered. I built a solid barrier using found wood and created this object which I was planning to place around town. I will be producing another soon.

However I brutishly tore apart my fragile structure, exposing nails and wood and each part became singular. I then in (a variety of combinations) rearranged the wood to create delicately balanced structures which hinted at the design of the original without the over biding authoritarian structure that it originally imposed. I documented these different manifestations in an experimental way. It has sparked some ideas about the way I create structures and how they are received.

TAXED:
Slip & Slide Slam
13 February 2009, 7pm
A Foundation, 67 Greenland Street, Liverpool L1 0BY

SLIP & SLIDE SLAM (taxed off Art In General, New York) is the first of our regular events for, and by, Liverpool based artists. A Foundation’s artist committee has set up a room containing 16mm slide projectors and laptops with data projectors, and invited twenty artists to each make a three minute presentation. We are seeking a critical audience, a collection of individuals willing to make their opinion of what they have seen – to probe, to scrutinize and to lay themselves as bare as those who willingly serve up their ideas as intellectual sustenance for the ravenous horde! But if you’d like to come along just to listen, that’s fine too.

Confirmed slammers include: Leo Fitzmaurice, Juan Cruz, Tracey Eastham, Mike Aitken, Claire Potter, Karen McLeod, Tabitha Moses, Jack Welsh, Neko, Claudia Lastra, Sacha Waldron, Jemma Eagan, Patrick Gould, Birgit Deubner, Emily Speed, Josh Tennant, Mike Aitken, Amy Goring, Daniel Simpkins, Harry Lawson

Plasterboard

I have added a new image to the work section. Plasterboard is a piece which examines the materiality of work referencing Modernist sculpture. More work to be added over the next week or two.
